OMG! I am still in a state of disbelief that my phone rang and Lochai was on the other end! That’s right, Lochai, the famous, award-winning photographer who “shoots for the walls, not the computer screen.” The submissive in me fed on His dominant energy. I wrote about my silly schoolgirl crush on Catalina Says a couple of days ago. Essentially I threw myself shamelessly at His feet and asked Him to do with me what He will… Oh My!

And now the part you’ve all been waiting for ::drumroll please:: All of Lochai’s answers to my burning questions:

What does it mean to You to “shoot for the walls and not the computer screen?”

I used to shoot just “sets” of images to populate either my websites of other websites.  The sets told a story by viewing the groups of images.  This is all well & good for porn and the computer, but I found that I was losing my sense of “The Image” for the image sake.  I now shoot, as well as teach others to shoot for “IT”  that one image that other people will look at and want to hang on their wall & not just look at on their computer screen.  Thought I do have my work hanging in galleries around the world, most of my work is found by people thru the internet.  I try to create images that people will want a larger printed version of to hang on their wall.  Many times my images transcend what viewers “normally” like in that I very often get comments like, “I don’t normally like bondage images but this one just….”  This is an image that is destined for the wall…

I understand You have some gallery shows on the horizon, one of them at the World Erotic Art Museum in Miami Beach, FL in August. What makes this particular exhibition special to You?

Wow….  To hang in a Museum is an amazing thing.  To hang in this Museum is even a greater compliment in that the owner/curator, Naomi Wilzig, does not normally collect photography & has only just started to.  She has thousands of painting, sculptures and other various articles that have moved her over the years and only a few photographs including ones from a good friend of mine, BT Charles.  She has had many one person displays exhibited in the galleries in the 3 years WEAM has been open, but she asked me to be the first photographer.  I am also a local so this adds to the pride I feel.  Art gallery shows are wonderful but to say that you are displayed in a museum, for me that is something I am very proud of.  I will also have Beach Bound added to the permanent collection. I was also the first heterosexual male artist to have a special “Guest Gallery” show that lasted a year of 30 of my images in the Leather Archives & Museum in Chicago http://www.leatherarchives.org/ which just came down in May.

On your FetLife profile it says, “I have a wife, a girlfriend, a mansion & a yacht. ;-)” Do You consider yourself to be polyamorous, and if so, how does that manifest in Your relationships? So when i come to visit your mansion, will You take me out on Your yacht? :)

LOL…  Yes, My wife & I are polyamorous and we do have real relationships outside of our marriage.  Many of my relationships are “play” relationships in the bdsm scene but I do have a beautiful woman I consider my girlfriend as well.  Being an educator in the bdsm scene affords me the opportunity to meet many people across the country and an opportunity to play with many people I find attractive without the guilt of cheating.  With my photography it does not come into play most of the time because I have only a professional relationship with my models.  Yes, I do have many playmates that model for me but there is a very firm line I do not cross while creating my art.  Another aspect of being poly that works is that my models can try & seduce me thru the lens & it does not make me or them uncomfortable when the action turns sexual in my lens.

As to the mansion & the yacht?  Elmer Fudd reference…….  But… you are welcome in my home & I will gladly take you out on my lake….. ;-)

How are kinbaku, shibari, shibaru, nawa shibari, nawashi different? Just recently i have heard them thrown around in all kinds of contexts and honestly, i have no idea what is what at this point.

Don’t worry yourself about it.  These are basically Japanese words used by westerners to describe aspects of rope bondage and the people who do rope bondage.  They are also used by some Japanese artists but  they are really just descriptors for people who want/need a basis to understand what they are studying or viewing. Rope bondage is an art form.  It transcends names & descriptions.  Those of us who are into it for the art just call it rope bondage or rope art.

How did You learn to do rope bondage artfully?  How did You learn to do photography artfully? Do You see rope bondage to be an art in the way that you see photography?

Is it artful?  Thanks…. :-)   From a very young age I was tying the neighborhood girls & as I got older I was lucky enough to have girlfriends that allowed me to tie them up.  I started to to do artistic rope purposely about 12 years ago when I saw beautiful ties done by Japanese masters on the internet.  I sought out & found those who were making art with rope & not just binding pretty girls.  Midori was my first mentor & I just started creating from there.  ”I use the body as my canvas & rope as my medium of choice”

Artful Photography  Hmmm, I just shoot from the hip.  If people enjoy my work & think its art, I guess I have the eye, this is what I want to convey to to others.  Actually I started to make artful images when I wanted to catch the beauty of the rope art I was creating.  I have written a number of articles on “Capturing the Art” in which I talk about taking one form of art to create another form of art.  Yes, I look at my rope work with the same eye as my camera work.  Whenever I tie, regardless of having a camera around, I look at the angles & the way the light in the room hits the body & ropes.

What does Your art mean to You? What does fetish mean to You? What are you looking for? How do you know when you’ve found it? Do you see it when you see the model? Do you see it as soon as you’ve gotten the shot? Do you see it in the darkroom? What is *it* to You?

To me my art is ….. me.  I love capturing models being themselves.  I prefer to work with men & woman who enjoy their bodies & the activities they are engaged in while we shoot.  I really shoot for myself, yes I do enjoy when others like what I produce but it is rare that I shoot what other peo

ple tell or ask me to shoot.  Unless they pay me of course!  Fetish to me is people loving the items around them & using them to feel sexy.  Rope to me is my fetish ;-)  I have such a deep love of the rope art of tying that I have started to make my own rope from twine.  In the past I used to buy raw lengths of rope & “finish” it myself, so that I could have more of a connection with my tools sort of like a painter making his own paint.  Now I spin my own lengths to use on my models & will actually start selling rope made with my own hands.

What am I looking for?  World Peace. I will know I found it when the bills stop coming in the mail… ;-)

I want my models “inner self” or alter ego to come thru to my lens.  Every person has this inner person & I feel it comes out when they allow themselves to become sexual.  This is what I want to capture.  Nudity does not need to be the only way to be sexual, a look, an article of clothing, a location can convey just as much if not more than an in your face sexual act.  I would rather capture pre or post orgasm to convey that act.   Many times I know I found “IT” when I sit down at my computer, rarely does it happen when I snap the image.  It does happen but not as often.  I usually don’t pose my models but tell them to “do their thing” & I act as a documentarian capturing their activity.  Since I don’t want to miss “The” shot, I keep watching my model & look at the camera later. “IT” …  that will take me longer to explain that we have time for.  If you really want to know what “IT” is to me, you will need to see “IT” in the image & not be told what “IT” is.  Basically it’s an image that just… works…..

What advice do you have for aspiring bondage artists?

Some advise to budding riggers & photographers….  Just keep tying & shooting.  Look at other people’s work & find what works for you & try to emulate it.  By doing that you will create your own style and will grow by leaps & bounds.  Just Have Fun
